The next decade promises to transform every aspect of our lives. For example, there is a high probability that children born in 2020 and beyond will never learn to drive a car because of autonomous driving cars. This transformation is happening because of the maturity of three converging technologies — Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5g.

Together, these technologies allow for accessing, processing, analyzing, storing, and moving unprecedented volumes of data. …

Every day I take the time to look at the new computer vision articles on This is my curated list of articles for January 29, 2021 related to either Edge AI or use cases relevant to industry.

Today we have one article which is a use case for detecting fires using a fusion of visible and infrared imagery.

Assessing the applicability of Deep Learning-based visible-infrared fusion methods for fire imagery

This paper examines fusing the two most common vision-based fire detection techniques: visible imagery and infrared imagery. The visible imagery solutions often suffer from false positives and false negatives…

Regularly, I come across a skill that is in short supply in the software development community. And based on this, I propose that it is the #1 skill for software developers to obtain in 2021. The positive thing is it is a skill that everyone has the ability to learn very quickly.

So without further ado, that skill is: LISTENING.

We need to learn to listen to the users of the software we build. I often see software developers expect users to change the way they work to accommodate the software instead of the software accommodating the way they work.

The combination of sensors (such as cameras for vision) and artificial intelligence has coined the term AIoT. Awareness is created by augmenting raw data (stemming from sensors) with derived-values (created by inference-engines that exploit machine learning models.) The awareness is locally created at the edge. It can generate actionable insights that are timely and accurate (due to real-time scoring on vast amounts of raw data). …
